Saxophone Auditions

Saxophone audition requirements

Students are asked to prepare a scale and a technique study for their audition and they are also given a first year exercise to sight-read.  Auditions are performed in a one-on-one setting outside of class time and I evaluate each part of the audition based on note accuracy, rhythm and beat, articulation, and tone quality.

The students’ band marks and band rehearsal attendance will also be considered.

Each year 4-6 grade 8 band students are selected to play saxophone.  The saxophone is a very popular instrument and it is not unusual for 15 or more students to audition for this limited number of positions.

Students may set up a time to meet with me if they would like to review their rubrics following auditions.

2020 Saxophone Audition Requirements (February 6-7)

  1. Please come prepared to play Bb concert scale, arpeggio and thirds, and the chromatic scale.
  2. Please come prepared to play page 4, #13 (Knucklebuster) from the grade 8 book
  3. You will also be asked to sight-read a few lines of intermediate level music on your current instrument.

All saxophone students are required to attend extra rehearsals, and will be asked to demonstrate Bb, Eb, Ab and F concert scales, arpeggios and thirds on the saxophone before they are asked to begin to play their new instruments in the concert band.  They will continue to participate in band classes and rehearsals on their first instruments until that time.
